Roads open!

It appears from the Icelandic Road administration website that the road linking the northern part of the Westfjords with the southern region has been opened for the first time this year.

This is good news. It is now possible to drive all the way around the Westfjords peninsula, if you are brave enough! (from road.is. the roads in red are the ones that are closed, the other colours indicate the roads are open, with various degrees of obstruction)

On a more serious note, you shouldn’t get put off by worries about getting to Flateyri in the Wintertime. The roads in the northern part of the Westfjords (eg where Flateyri is) are all paved and very easy to negotiate. The road between Reykjavik and Flateyri is pretty much always open, it is only when there is a serious snowstorm that there can be difficult driving conditions, and that is why I recommend hiring a 4×4 to make the trip if you are going in the Wintertime (roughly november through to April).
