The Westfjords water trail

Perhaps one of the understated and unknown attractions of the Westfjords is the network of unspoiled, geothermally heated natural pools that exist around the area. This provides an excellent opportunity to go swimming or just relax and take in the beautiful surroundings, or, in the winter, the northern lights.

If this appeals to you, there is a website that provides more information about all the natural swimming pools in the region. Vatnavinir Vestfjarða is a small group of individuals, landowners, small local businesses, local non-profit organizations, local authorities, architects and entrepreneurs who maintain and support the network of pools in the region.

Some of the pools are in very remote, hard to reach areas, but one is just on the road up from Reykjavik to Flateyri. The Hotel Reykjanes is a converted boarding schoolhouse that makes an ideal place to break the long journey, where you can enjoy a good meal followed by a swim for less than £10 (December 2010 prices). Its highly recommended!
